About NZ Citizenship Requirements

To be eligible for New Zealand citizenship, you must:

  • Have been a resident for at least 5 years
  • Have been present in New Zealand for at least 240 days in each of those 5 years
  • Have been present in New Zealand for at least 1,350 days during the 5 years
  • Meet character requirements
  • Have sufficient knowledge of English
  • Demonstrate commitment to New Zealand
  • Intend to continue to reside in New Zealand if granted citizenship
